Day 06 - Thursday 08/29/24 - Dawson City, Yukon Territory
With a full day to explore Dawson City, we ate some of our snack for breakfast and had some tea in the room. We then walked to the free ferry while photographing historic buildings and looking for bingo items. The ferry crosses the Yukon River feeding traffic to/from the Top of the World Highway. All sizes of vehicles are carried on the ferry from large semi trucks to campers, vehicles with trailers, motorcycles, bicycles, and foot passengers. The current is pretty strong and it's a fun ride across.
On what I'll call the north side of the river we spotted a provincial park and learned of a Sternwheeler graveyard on the other side of the park. Since we love camping, we walked up to and through the park checking out campsites and exited the park downriver from the ferry and walked about a 1/4 mile to the Sternwheeler graveyard. There were at least 8 ruins of Sternwheelers and it was fun to explore them before walking back through the park and back to the ferry.
We had to wait for a ferry but were soon on the Dawson City side where we did a dedicated walk through the city where I photographed many of the historic and unique buildings. Around 3pm we ended up at the Eldorado Hotel where we ate a late lunch. My entree was poutine and a Denver Sandwich. It was yummy or I was simply hungry from all of the walking.
We continued our walk before ending back at our hotel for a little rest. We attended the 10:30pm show at Diamond Tooth Gerties and it was not quite as crowded and the show was entirely different from the night before.
We have another early start tomorrow morning with a pretty unique charter flight ahead of us.
